You may not be familiar with Pi Day, but its popularity as a fun, new holiday is growing among math geeks like us. Held each year on March 14th, the holiday celebrates the mathematical constant π (pi). The date is derived from π’s first three digits 3.14 and is coincidentally also the birthday of Albert Einstein. Physicist Larry Shaw created the first Pi Day celebration at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988. To celebrate, some people marched around in circles and then consumed fruit pies. At our house we practiced counting to ten in English and Spanish using puzzles, then consumed the delicious chocolate birthday cake Mommy baked for Daddy’s birthday.
