A Real Caboose

Here we are on a real caboose. It was donated to the Evansville Museum by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. This circa 1900 caboose’s luxury accommodations includes a pot-bellied stove and washstand. It served the train’s crew as home and office. This is where they worked, ate and slept. Here, the conductor communicated with the train's engineer and kept records of each car's contents and destination. The brakeman utilized the caboose's crow's nest to watch for overheated axle journal boxes--commonly referred to as hotboxes. The twins are train crazy and were very excited to be actually boarding a real caboose.
